La Valette chapel

Salvizinet

Taking its name from its location "chapelle de la petite vallée". A place of prayer and welcome, where pilgrims could stay for three days, and were given food for a day's walk.

Description

The chapel is a humble sanctuary comprising a nave extended by a semi-circular choir. It is typical of 11th-century early Romanesque art in Forez: archaic-style capitals crown columns in the doorway and inside, under arcatures set against the walls. They are carved with rudimentary motifs: foliage, human masks, animals. Painted decoration dating from the 13th to 14th centuries partially covers the interior walls. The windows are widely splayed inwards to let in as much light as possible. Renovated chapel. To the right of the chapel is a small enclosure on the site of the village cemetery. A cross stands at the base of its granite shaft, with a niche for a lantern for the dead. Restoration of the walls and furnishings, including statues, altars and baptismal fonts, by the commune, has restored the chapel to its former glory. The chapel is open all year round (with a protective grille preventing access to the choir). Free admission.
