Built in the heart of a preserved and authentic territory, this fortified medieval village, extends to the high point of Forez mounts : Pierre-sur-Haute (1634 m). Here, heritage rhymes with landscape.
Description
One of the iconic villages in the Monts du Forez, with a fine architectural unity featuring stone buildings, Sauvain is perched high above the Lignon valley.
The village centre is huddled neatly around a church that is a listed monument, and traces of the old fortifications the circular rampart walk can still be seen.
The settlement climbs 1,000 m in steps up the mountainside to the summit of Pierre-sur-Haute. This spot forms the gateway to the Hautes Chaumes area and the Colleigne regional nature park.
Considered for decades as the birthplace of Fourme de Montbrison cheese, the product is today the driving force in the village's economy, and you can visit the Musée de la Fourme et des Traditions to discover its history.
